Vietnam’s Transport Ministry will carry out five projects within the first quarter to upgrade the North-South railway at a cost of VND5 trillion ($213 million).

Of the projects that have been planned, three will renovate railway sections from Hanoi – Vinh, which stretches 319km long, Vinh – Nha Trang (995km), and Nha Trang – Saigon (441km). The total cost of these projects will be VND3,090 trillion.

The remaining two projects will comprise work to upgrade three passenger terminals and four cargo terminals at VND470 billion, and to upgrade a railway bridge crossing the Duong River, a tributary of the Red River in northern Vietnam, at more than VND1.84 trillion.

All five projects will use the state budget allocated for public projects in the 2021-2025 period.

The rail network has not received any major upgrades in decades, losing out to road and air transport, preferred for their speed and convenience.

By 2050, the country plans to have 25 rail routes covering 6,354 km from the current seven that stretch 2,440 km.
