Two Vietnam film directors get grants from South Korea festival

Two Vietnamese directors’ projects are among those to win funding from the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Project Market.

The scripts of « Tick It » and « Who Created Human Beings? » were among the four winners, with the former by Tran Thanh Huy getting CJ Entertainment Award’s $10,000 grant and Le Binh Giang’s work getting ArteKino International Prize’s €6,000 ($7,000).

« Tick It » will be an action-adventure-romance film about young people who want to overcome despair and set out in search of a better life but have to face many dangers like crossing the border into the U.K. in a refrigerated container.

This is not Huy’s first brush with fame at the Busan International Film Festival. His movie « Rom » had won the grand prize in 2019.

Giang’s « Who Created Human Beings? », to be produced by Le Quynh Anh of Hanoi Doclab and Panuksmi Hardjowirogo of Singapore’s M’GO Films, will talk about humans’ struggle to choose between family, love and religious beliefs.

Meanwhile, the Busan Award ($15,000) went to « Commodity » by Indian director Kislay while the MONEFF Award ($20,000) went to « Nowhere To Hide Ⅱ » by South Korea’s Lee Myungse.

The APM, held virtually from October 26-28, received 193 entries from 36 economies this year.
