Vietnam’s Internet speed sluggish due to errors on three major cable systems

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Three major submarine cable systems in Vietnam are all experiencing issues, resulting in sluggish Internet speed throughout the country.

A network operator confirmed on Wednesday that an error had been detected on the Intra-Asia (IA) cable system a few days earlier.

The problem is expected to be settled by the end of this month, the source added.

Meanwhile, repairs to the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) and Asia America Gateway (AAG), which have had issues since late 2021, will not be finished until mid-March.

With the three major submarine cable systems all having been disrupted, international connection in Vietnam has been seriously affected.

Although local network operators have implemented their contingency plans, crippled Internet speed during this period is inevitable.

International connection in Vietnam relies on multiple submarine cable systems, namely the APG, AAG, IA, SMW3, and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1), according to the Vietnam Internet Association.

The APG, which runs about 10,400 kilometers underwater across the Pacific Ocean, connects Vietnam with mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore.

The AAG is a 20,000-kilometer submarine communications cable system connecting Southeast Asia with the U.S. mainland across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii.

The IA, with a total length of 6,800 kilometers, links Internet users in Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Japan.
