The divorce rate in the Southeast and Mekong Delta regions is 3% – almost twice that of other regions in the country, according to the results of the population and family planning census made by the General Statistics Office released recently.

Specifically, the divorce rate in the northern midlands and mountainous region is 1.9%; The Red River Delta and the North Central Coast and the Central Coast 1.6%; and the Central Highlands 1.9%.

The divorce rate in urban areas is a little higher than in rural areas – 2.6% compared to 2%.

The proportion of the population aged 15 and over who have been married in Vietnam is 76.9%. Of that figure, the number of people who are still married makes up 67.7%.

The proportion of the population aged 15 and over who have never been married accounts for 23.1% – an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared to 2019.

The proportion of the population aged 15 and over in rural areas who are married is 5 percentage points higher than in urban areas.

The northern midlands and mountainous region have the lowest proportion of the “never married” group – accounting for 17.7%. This is also the region with the highest proportion of married people in the country – 73.3%.

In contrast, the Southeast is the region with the highest rate of the never-married, and also the region with the lowest percentage of spouses, accounting for 30.5% and 61.1%, respectively.

This result partly reflects the difference in customs, cultural and social life between regions.

The Southeast (including Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong) is an area that attracts many people to study and work. Many of them come from rural areas to find jobs so they face a lot of pressure in terms of family and income. These may be the reasons why the Southeast has the highest proportion of never-married people in the country.
