Vietnam expats complain about healthcare service, public transport

Expats said they found it difficult to get healthcare access in Vietnam and complained of a lack of public transport in the country as well, according to a survey.

Out of 53 destinations ranked in the annual Expat Insider 2023 survey by InterNations, the world’s largest expat community with more than 4.8 million members, Vietnam was ranked 46th in the two categories about the availability of healthcare and public transport.

Regarding healthcare service, expats living and working in Vietnam complained of the lack of easy access to all kinds of necessary healthcare.

Just over half the surveyed expats, or 53%, are happy with the quality of medical care, almost 20 percentage points less than the global average, which is 70%.

They also ranked Vietnam’s infrastructure for cars in the bottom 10 (48th) and put the availability of public transportation at the 46th position.

Both the two subcategories on healthcare and transport belong to the Quality of Life section, one of five main indices of the survey, with the other four being Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance, and the Expat Essentials Index.

Overall, Vietnam comes 14th out of 53 destinations in the survey.

It secures 1st place worldwide in the Personal Finance Index as expats are satisfied with their financial situation thanks to the affordable living cost in the nation.

Expats are also happy with the Local Friendliness, placing the country fifth, and Work & Leisure, where Vietnam landed at the sixth spot.

Overall, 85% of expats are happy with their life in Vietnam, compared to a global average of 72%.

According to the Expat Insider 2023 survey results, Mexico (1st), Spain, Panama, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Bahrain, and Portugal (10th) are the best destinations for expats in 2023. The top 5 destinations stand out with good to great results in the Personal Finance Index.

InterNations has been conducting its annual Expat Insider survey since 2014.

This year’s edition is based on data from 12,065 expats representing 171 nationalities and living in 172 countries or territories. They provided information on various areas of expat life, as well as their gender, age, and nationality.
