Vietnam considers using FaceID for immigration procedures

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has requested the public security ministry look into using FaceID and electronic passports to make online immigration procedures more convenient.

A directive on tourism development issued by Chinh on Friday called for the Ministry of Public Security to renovate administrative procedures and use technology and automation to process procedures for foreign visitors to Vietnam.

The ministry will also consider trials to grant border gate visas on the spot for foreign visitors, and plans will be reported to Chinh in the second quarter.

The public security ministry, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plan to propose incentive policies regarding immigration for certain well-developed international markets that demonstrate high tourism spending and long durations of stay.

Chinh also requested localities to instruct tourism establishments to list pricing publicly and offer their goods and services at fair market prices. Localities also need to foster a friendly and hospitable environment for tourism, according to the prime minster.

Since last year, the Civil Aviation Authority has implemented trials using biometrics for passengers on planes. Security booths and boarding gates have devices installed for facial recognition, and the data is used in conjunction with data from people’s personal IDs.
