Five coal miners were killed in an accident at a coal mine in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam on Monday night, the state-owned Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) reported on Tuesday.

The accident happened at 10:10 pm at a mine of Hon Gai Coal Company, a subsidiary of Vinacomin.

The five workers were inside the mine when coal and rock suddenly collapsed.

Upon receiving reports of the accident, Nguyen Xuan Ky, secretary of the Party Committee and chairman of the People’s Council of Quang Ninh Province, tasked relevant agencies with coordinating with Vinacomin for search and rescue efforts.

The work ended at 5:28 am on Tuesday.

Vinacomin initially provided VND20 million (US$795.6) to each family of the deceased, with the group’s labor union also contributing VND20 million per victim.

Hon Gai Coal Company pledged to cover funeral costs and offer VND100 million (US$3,973) in support to each family.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
