Over $34 mn allocated for airport expansion in Vietnam’s Ca Mau
Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam plans to allocate over VND860 billion (US$34.9 million) to expand and upgrade its airport in order to accommodate larger aircraft like Airbus A320s and the equivalents.
The southernmost province will tap its budget to implement the airport upgrade project from 2024 to 2025, the provincial Department of Planning and Investment announced on Friday.
The project will involve clearing approximately 105 hectares of land in the provincial city of Ca Mau and relocating five organizations and around 740 households.
During the rest of this year, the province will carry out investment procedures, survey and measure land size and assets on the property, work out compensation and resettlement plans, and hand over part of cleared land to the project developer.
In 2025, the province will strive to complete the compensation and resettlement process, with plans to hand over the remaining cleared land to the state-run Airports Corporation of Vietnam, which operates 22 airports in Vietnam, including the airport in Ca Mau.
Once the project is completed, the Ca Mau airport’s capacity will increase from 200,000 to three million passengers per year by 2050.
The airport currently has one 1.5-kilometer-long and 30-meter-wide runway, only capable of supporting short-haul flights using small aircraft like the ATR72.
Besides, the airport operates just one route linking Ca Mau and Ho Chi Minh City.
