Road project to ease traffic congestion around Tan Son Nhat airport
A road project linking with the third terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC is expected to begin work in the second quarter of next year.
Luong Minh Phuc, director of the HCMC Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic, project investor, said relevant units are currently coordinating to speed up site clearance and necessary procedures to acquire a military plot used for the project to keep up with the construction schedule.
Stretching over four kilometers from Tran Quoc Hoan Road to Cong Hoa Road in Tan Binh District and connecting to the airport’s T3 terminal, the new road is expected to ease long-lasting traffic congestion around the international airport.
Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City recently approved the project costing a total investment of over VND4.8 trillion ($210.7 million), including nearly VND1.5 trillion for construction, VND2.4 trillion in compensation for affected households, and the rest for operational costs.
The six-lane road, designed for motorized vehicles to travel at a speed of 50 km/h, will be installed with a lighting system and lined with trees. It would have two tunnels.
Work on the T3 terminal is expected to begin this month and complete by 2023. The terminal, with a capacity of 20 million passengers a year and is intended for domestic flights, is expected to relieve the current overload on T1.
Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam’s largest airport, has been overloaded for many years. The airport has been serving 36 million passengers a year since 2017, well above its designed capacity, which was 25 million passengers per year by 2020.
