Heavy rains, whirlwinds damage over 1,000 houses, leave 1 dead, 2 missing in Vietnam

Downpours, whirlwinds, and hail damaged and tore the roofs of over 1,000 houses in northern and central Vietnam on Monday, leaving one person in north-central Quang Binh Province and another in neighboring Quang Tri Province missing along with one in Quang Tri dead.

The victim in Quang Binh was missing after his ship sank at sea due to strong winds.

Meanwhile, the body of a woman in Quang Tri was found at sea at about 1:00 pm on Monday. She and her husband were fishing when their boat capsized.

Local authorities are searching for her husband.

Whirlwinds also sank and damaged three fishing boats in central Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces.

Moreover, nearly 7,600ha of rice and other crops were damaged and 16 heads of cattle died. 

The northern, central, and Central Highlands regions experienced rains with rainfall ranging between 50 and 90 millimeters on Monday night, according to a report by the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. 

The northern provinces of Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Cao Bang as well as north-central Nghe An and Quang Binh Provinces also saw strong winds and hail.

Some areas reported a high rainfall of over 100 millimeters, including Linh Phu Commune of Chiem Hoa District and Minh Quang Commune of Lam Binh District in northern Tuyen Quang Province with a respective rainfall of 155 and 122 millimeters.

Thai Nguyen City in the namesake northern province recorded precipitation of 130 millimeters, Dan Hoa Commune of Quang Binh Province’s Minh Hoa District, 111 millimeters, and Thach Xuan Commune of Ha Tinh Province’s Thach Ha District, 110 millimeters.

Rains were forecast to continue in the south-central, Central Highlands, and southern regions on Tuesday with a rainfall of 20-40 millimeters, with some places expected to receive up to 70 millimeters.

Such rains may be accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong winds and can cause floods in low-lying areas.
