Vietnamese film ‘Glorious Ashes’ to compete for 2024 Oscar
Vietnam’s national film evaluation council has chosen ‘Tro Tan Ruc Ro’ (Glorious Ashes) as the country’s entry for the preliminary round of the 2024 Oscar for Best International Feature.
Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Vietnam Cinema Department, on Wednesday confirmed the selection, which had been approved by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism one day prior.
“This is the decision made by the national council tasked with picking films for the Oscars,” Thanh said.
“’Tro Tan Ruc Ro’ garnered the highest number of votes, leading to its nomination.”
An Nam Film, the production company behind the movie, will complete the submission as per the requirements set out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before October 2.
‘Tro Tan Ruc Ro’ was directed by Bui Thac Chuyen as an adaptation of two short stories – ‘Tro Tan Ruc Ro’ and ‘Cui Muc Troi Ve’ (Floating Rotten Wood) – by renowned Vietnamese writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu, both of which depict women in rural villages in Vietnam’s southern region.
The 116-minute movie was honored as the Best Featured Film at the 2023 Golden Kite Awards, Vietnam’s version of the Oscars, and won the ‘Golden Balloon’ (Montgolfière d’or), the most prestigious award, at the Festival des 3 Continents 2022 in France.
