Dutch semiconductor chip firm Besi to invest in Ho Chi Minh City

BE Semiconductor Industries N.V. (Besi), a Dutch maker of chip equipment, will develop a factory project for semiconductor equipment components with a first-phase cost of US$4.7 million in the Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP) in Ho Chi Minh City, an economic hub in southern Vietnam.

The SHTP management board granted an investment registration certificate to the Besi representative in Hanoi on Thursday, within the framework of the Vietnam – Netherlands High-Tech Business Forum, in the presence of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte, who was on his official visit to Vietnam.

With the certificate, Besi will develop and operate a factory to manufacture semiconductor equipment components in the SHTP in 2025, according to Voice of Vietnam.

The project has an operating term of 50 years and will cost more than VND115 billion ($4.7 million) in its first phase.

In order to save time and cost, Besi has decided to rent a 2,000 square-meter ready-built workshop from Lap Thanh Ready-Built Factory Limited Company in the park, and will develop it into a Besi facility.

The investor expects to install machinery and equipment at the factory from now until the end of 2024, along with recruiting and training workers, before putting the facility into operation in the first quarter of 2025.

The workforce at the factory is forecast to reach up to 150 in two or three years to come.

Through the first phase, Besi will have an assessment on the local business environment before deciding on further investment, said Nguyen Anh Thi, head of the park management board.

The participation of Besi in the semiconductor field will significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the city in particular and Vietnam in general, Thi commented.

Along with providing high-skilled job opportunities for local workers, the project will also train a line-up of technicians in the field of semiconductor chips to provide services to customers in Vietnam and internationally, Thi elaborated.

Established in 1995, Besi engages in the development, manufacturing, marketing, sales and service of semiconductor assembly equipment for the global semiconductor and electronics industries, according to the board.

Headquartered in Duiven, a town in the eastern Netherlands, the global company is operating seven facilities in Asia and Europe and its customers are mainly multinational microchip manufacturers, electronics assembly contractors, and industrial companies, the board added.
