Vung Tau wants pedestrian tunnels for its beach

Vung Tau authorities want to build eight tunnels leading straight to its most popular beach, Bai Sau (Back Beach).

Each tunnel will span 10-15 m wide underneath Thuy Van Street in the city center, chairman Nguyen Trong Thuy told a meeting on Tuesday.

Of the tunnels, five will be built next to beachside hotels and restaurants for tourists. The remaining three tunnels will be built with the city’s budget.

The city has yet to reveal the total cost of the eight tunnels.

In April last year, Vung Tau, a popular weekend getaway that lies a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, launched a campaign to remove all tourism facilities built illegally along Bai Sau to give back open space to beachgoers.

Most of the projects demolished were blocking the sea view and obstructing paths leading to the beach.

After the beach was reclaimed, the city rolled out a master plan to give it a facelift.

The renovation plan said the beach will comprise an open area for public activities, including a square, a park, an underground parking lot, and shops.
