Vietnam leaves Paris Olympics empty-handed

Vietnam ended its Paris Olympics campaign on Thursday night after Nguyen Thi Huong competed in the quarterfinals of the women’s 200m canoeing, without winning a single medal.

The women’s 200m canoeing event had 33 athletes divided into five qualifying rounds, selecting the top two rowers in each round to enter the semifinals. Others were divided into three groups to compete in the quarterfinals, competing for six tickets to the semifinals.

The Vietnamese athlete finished in 49.74 seconds, 25th overall. She entered the quarterfinal and achieved a better result at 49.09 seconds, but only finished sixth and had no chance of advancing.

Huong was the last Vietnamese athlete to compete in Paris Olympics.

Previously, 15 Vietnamese athletes were eliminated in cycling, swimming, athletics, shooting, weightlifting, rowing, badminton, boxing, archery and judo.

Trinh Thu Vinh is the Vietnamese athlete who came closest to the chance of winning a medal. The 24-year-old shooter finished fourth in the women’s 10m air pistol final and seventh in the women’s 25m sport pistol final.

This is the second consecutive Olympic Games without a medal for Vietnam.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand has won six medals including one gold at the Paris Olympics, which will end Sunday. Philippines has claimed four medals including two gold, Indonesia three including two gold and Malaysia two bronze medals.
