12 soldiers caught in explosion during training exercise in southern Vietnam
A block of explosives at the National Shooting Range Area 3 in Xuan Loc District in the southern province of Dong Nai exploded, impacting 12 soldiers, with most of the bodies having been found.
The incident occured as the Military Zone 7 organized a defense operation exercise under harsh weather and complex terrain conditions from Dec. 1 to 4.
At 8:27 p.m. on Dec. 2, a task force from Battalion 17, Division 5 of the Military Zone 7 was transporting explosives to the assembly area at the National Shooting Range Area 3 in Xuan Tam Commune, Xuan Loc District, when heavy rain and thunderstorms caused them to stop for a break. Suddenly, the block of explosives exploded, causing casualties among soldiers.
Upon the incident, the unit’s leadership quickly responded. A total of 12 soldiers were reported missing, with most of the bodies now found. Search efforts are still ongoing.
The initial cause is believed to be lightning striking the electrical detonator, triggering the explosion.
The Ministry of National Defense has instructed Military Zone 7’s Command, along with relevant agencies and units, to urgently conduct an investigation at the scene and continue searching for the victims. They are also coordinating with local authorities to console the families of the soldiers, offer condolences, and provide policy support to the injured and deceased soldiers.
Authorities are continuing to secure the site and investigate the incident.
