Northern Vietnam temperatures drop to 2 C

Temperatures in 25 northern provinces have fallen below 15 degrees Celsius, with Mount Mau Son at an elevation of 1,600 metersrecording the lowest temperature at around 2 degrees.

On Tuesday, the second day under the influence of an intensified cold air mass, northern Vietnam experienced clear skies without rain, and temperatures continued dropping. Nine provinces and cities reported temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Mau Son in Lang Son Province saw its temperatures dropped two degrees from the previous day to just over 2 degrees.

Other high-altitude areas, such as Pha Din in Dien Bien, Trung Khanh in Cao Bang, and Sa Pa in Lao Cai, saw temperatures ranging from 5 to 6 degrees.

In Hanoi, weather stations in the outlying districts Ba Vi, Son Tay, and Hoai Duc recorded temperatures slightly above 14 degrees, while Lang and Ha Dong stations reported over 15 degrees. The previous day, Ba Vi recorded a low of 13 degrees and up to 18 degrees by noon.

The cold air mass is also affecting central Vietnam, with temperatures from Thua Thien-Hue to Thanh Hoa provinces dropping below 18 degrees. The coldest area was Vinh City in Nghe An, recording 12 degrees, while mountainous districts like Tuong Duong (Nghe An) and Huong Khe (Ha Tinh) experienced temperatures slightly above 13 degrees.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold air will continue to push southward into the south-central coast.

In northern and north-central Vietnam, the cold air mass remains dominant, with the lowest temperatures ranging from 11–14 degrees, dropping to 8–10 degrees in mountainous areas, and below 6 degrees in high mountain regions. Provinces from Quang Binh to Hue are expected to see temperatures between 14–17 degrees.

Three cold air waves affected northern Vietnam in January. The cold snap on Jan. 26 caused temperatures in many areas to fall below 5 degrees, notably in Sa Pa (Lao Cai) and Dong Van (Ha Giang), where snowfall was reported. Nationwide, temperatures were 0.5–1.5 degrees lower than the historical average in many regions.

Meteorologists predict that in February, cold air masses will continue to impact northern Vietnam. National average temperatures are expected to be close to historical averages for the same period, except for north-central and central Vietnam, where temperatures could be 0.5–1 degrees lower than usual.
