Vietnam identifies 40 gold mines with 30 tons of estimated reserves

A comprehensive mineral survey of northern Vietnam discovered 40 gold mines with total estimated reserves of nearly 30 tons, the Vietnam Geological and Mineral Department announced recently.

The mines are in several provinces: eight each in Bac Kan and Tuyen Quang, five in Lai Chau, four each in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, three each in Lang Son and Cao Bang, two each in Ha Giang and Yen Bai, and one in Dien Bien.

The Northwest Project, as the survey was known, also found other minerals like silver, copper and antimony.

Previously the country had identified around 500 sites with gold reserves and occurrences, explored 30 and found estimated reserves of around 300 tons.

Most of the deposits are in the northern mountains, with the rest in the central region.

The department said data from the recent survey, including maps, results, analytical samples, mine information, and ore points, has been digitized and is being integrated into a centralized database system designed for quick lookup, easy sharing and online connectivity, enabling the development of a national digital geological database.

« This is an important foundation for the comprehensive digital transformation of the geological sector, serving natural resources management and attracting investment in sustainable excavation, » said an official at the Vietnam Geological and Mineral Departmentsaid.

The Northwest Project got underway in 2017 on an area of 109,250 square kilometers and spanning 12 northern provinces and 21 districts in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An in the north central region.
