‘A retirement visa would bring more benefits’, readers argue over Vietnam’s golden visa plan
A recent proposal to introduce a 10-year « golden visa » for billionaires in Vietnam has garnered support from tourism insiders, who view it as a strategy to boost the country’s regional competitiveness. However, readers urged the government to also consider issues such as retirement visas and citizenship options for dedicated expats.

« (Golden visa is a) Good idea, but don’t aim too high, be realistic. Vietnam doesn’t have much to offer to billionaires. But it can offer everything that a middle class western retiree wants. »

« The ‘golden visa’ elsewhere has been a total disaster, hardly any takers. The requirements are set far too high and millionaires USD won’t naturally choose SE Asia to reside. A retirement visa would be much more attractive and would compete with Thailand and neighboring countries! »

« Definitely a retirement visa. I have lived here now over 7 years my son is married to a Vietnamese girl and they have a baby. My husband died here 4 years ago. I think of this as my long term home and would love the security of a long term retirement visa. I have a guaranteed monthly income so money is not a problem. »

« Before offering the ‘golden visa’, the government should instead first focus on offering an easier pathway to citizenship for foreigners already here in Vietnam. No more applying for TRC cards every 3 years. I’ve lived here for 6 years, married the same length of time and on my 3rd TRC card. I want dual citizenship. »

« I hope they also consider granting the long term visas for people that have invested possibly ten or more years of their lives here developing opportunities in agriculture, export markets, education etc not just based on personal wealth or fame. »

« The government should be also considering how to make permanent residency more viable. Plenty of expats been here years pumping billions into the economy with their tax money and spending yet still have to renew a temporary resident card. »

« If Vietnam wants people who have a commitment to Vietnam then what Vietnam should do is make it easier for people with family ties to Vietnam to live with their families in Vietnam. True permanent residence would be nice and citizenship would be even better – no one is going to truly commit to life in Vietnam with anything less. Lots of countries are having success with this approach. »
