Vietnam’s booming film industry opens new paths for young talent

As Vietnam’s film industry grows rapidly and local productions increasingly break revenue records, opportunities for young creatives to pursue careers in filmmaking and media are expanding.

Vietnam’s box office is showing strong signs of post-pandemic recovery. According to Statista, the market is projected to reach US$45.03 million by 2025. In the first quarter of this year alone, seven Vietnamese films surpassed the VND100 billion ($3.85 million) milestone: « Chi dau », « Bo tu bao thu », « Nu hon bac ty », « Den am hon », « Nha gia tien », « Quy nhap trang », and « Dia Dao: Mat troi trong bong toi ».

On a global scale, the film and video market is also expanding. The Business Research Company forecasts that the industry will grow from $308.47 billion in 2024 to $328.49 billion in 2025, representing a 6.5% compound annual growth rate.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has identified cinema as both an art form and a key contributor to the economy, with an aim to have cultural industries—including film—account for 7% of national GDP by 2030.

This growth is creating a rising demand for skilled professionals across all aspects of filmmaking. The cultural industries workforce is expected to grow by 8% annually, accounting for about 6% of Vietnam’s total labor force.

From cinema and television to advertising and live entertainment, the industry’s expansion opens new doors for young people interested in creative careers. However, there remains a gap in Vietnam’s higher education system when it comes to comprehensive, in-depth training in film and media production.

Global vision for film and media production

While many young Vietnamese are passionate about filmmaking, few have access to structured training, or the professional environment needed to develop their skills to a global standard.

To bridge this gap and meet growing demand, British University Vietnam (BUV) has developed a British-validated Bachelor of Arts program in Film and Media Production. Designed to equip students with both technical and strategic capabilities, the curriculum combines academic theory with hands-on learning to prepare students for leadership roles in the creative industry.

Taught entirely in English, students will learn how to balance creativity with commercial considerations, utilize industry standard techniques and technologies, and develop projects for the regional and international markets.

Through real-world projects, internships, workshops, and company visits, students can build industry experience and expand their professional networks. Upon graduation, they receive an internationally recognized British degree and leave with a comprehensive portfolio and a strategic mindset.

Dr. Paul D.J. Moody, Head of BUV’s School of Communications & Creative Industries, noted: « Vietnam’s young, dynamic market of 100 million gives strong growth potential for film and media production. Our new program will educate and promote a new generation of high-quality film and media creatives to play key roles in the Vietnamese, ASEAN and wider international markets.

BUV is one of the few institutions offering a film and media production program designed to international standards. The program is awarded by Arts University Bournemouth (U.K.), a respected institution known for producing globally recognized talent. Its alumni have won major honors such as Oscars, BAFTAs, and the Turner Prize.

As Vietnam’s entertainment sector continues to grow, programs like BUV’s are helping to prepare the next wave of professionals to shape the country’s film and media landscape both at home and on the international stage.

British University Vietnam (BUV) is Vietnam’s first QS 5-star university and the first in Vietnam and ASEAN accredited by QAA, the UK’s prestigious higher education quality assurance agency. BUV’s well-designed programs stay current with industry trends, combining theory and practice to ensure 100% graduate employability or further study within three months of graduation.
