Vietnam to have new commercial airline
The Vietnamese prime minister has green-lighted investment in a new airline, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, backed by leading Vietnamese conglomerate Sun Group, with a total capital of VND2.5 trillion (US$96 million), making it Vietnam’s seventh commercial airline.
The country currently has six local commercial airlines, including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines, Pacific Airlines, and VASCO.
The new airline is set to operate a fleet of 31 aircraft by 2030.
As per the prime minister’s Decision 979, Sun Phu Quoc Airways Limited Liability Company, Sun Group’s subsidiary, will implement the airline project.
Sun PhuQuoc Airways will focus on commercial passenger air transport, while offering charter flight services with the aim of serving Vietnam’s major tourism and business hubs, as well as international destinations.
According to Sun Group, the approval marked a significant milestone for Vietnam’s aviation sector and the tourism development of Phu Quoc Island off southern Kien Giang Province.
The airline is slated to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, offering connections from Phu Quoc to key domestic and international economic and tourist hubs.
Sun Group is still operating its luxury airline Sun Air, which offers personalized and specialized private jet services to high-end customers.
