Da Nang aims to build 5 islands inspired by Dubai’s model
At an event on Sunday announcing the prime minister’s decision on the establishment of the Da Nang Free Trade Zone, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh revealed one of Da Nang City’s most ambitious development proposals – the creation of five artificial islands off its coast, modeled after the world-renowned palm tree-shaped artificial island Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.
Deputy PM Binh praised the coastal city’s innovative vision and its proactive role in reshaping its economic future.
“We are very pleased with Da Nang’s bold initiatives. In addition to the formation of a free trade zone, the government, the Politburo, and the National Assembly always welcome Da Nang City’s new economic projects such as a financial hub, a deep-water port, and the Da Nang Downtown project,” he stated.
“These projects will certainly drive Da Nang’s robust growth in the years to come. »
Speaking of the plan to encroach on the sea to build five artificial islands, he said that when he saw the draft plan for these islands, he immediately thought of the palm-shaped islands in Dubai.
“In the near future, we may see unique islands off Da Nang’s coast, just like those in Dubai,” he said.
“With strong collaboration and strategic investment, Da Nang is poised to become a leading economic powerhouse for both the central region and the nation. »
In late April, Da Nang Party secretary Nguyen Van Quang disclosed that the city was actively pursuing several large-scale projects to accelerate its growth.
One of these was the plan to create a free trade zone and a financial center by calling for investment in five floating islands in Da Nang Bay.
These islands would add some 48 kilometers of new coastline, dramatically reshaping the city’s geography and potential.
However, Quang emphasized that the project was still in the research phase.
“This is a highly complex and large-scale project. We are conducting thorough studies and formulating detailed plans to offer special investment mechanisms with the aim of mirroring the success of Dubai’s model,” he said.
“If successful, this project will deliver immense value, not only in economic and social terms over the coming decades but also in transforming Da Nang’s image and positioning it as a regional and global brand. »

- How much of Vietnam’s policy reform is driven by FTAs ? Over three decades, Vietnam’s economy has transitioned successfully from a centrally planned agrarian economy to a dynamic manufacturing and services hub, due largely to the doi moi reforms initiated in 1986 and the country’s pursuit of free trade agreements (FTAs). The effectiveness of these FTAs in driving ground-level reforms remains questionable — the ratification of Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement have significantly impacted intellectual property and labour law reform, while having limited effect on state-owned enterprise reform....
