Foreigners can now get digital IDs in Vietnam
Vietnam has launched a 50-day campaign to issue digital identification accounts to foreigners living, working and studying in the country.
The drive, which started on July 1 and runs until Aug. 19, is part of efforts to streamline administrative procedures and enhance convenience, safety and transparency for the growing number of foreign residents, students, workers and tourists in Vietnam, local media reported.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, digital ID accounts will allow foreigners to complete administrative tasks online, saving time and paperwork while ensuring authenticity and protecting their legal rights. Level-2 digital IDs also grant access to services such as banking transactions, rental registrations, public services and electronic residence cards via the VNeID app.
Authorities say creating unified digital profiles for each foreigner will improve immigration verification, residency management and the handling of violations if needed. The initiative is part of Vietnam’s push to build a transparent, safe and user-friendly digital administration system.
Under regulations effective since July 2024, the Immigration Department and the Department of Administrative Management on Social Order are responsible for issuing these IDs to foreigners holding permanent or temporary residence cards. To apply, foreigners must visit the Immigration Department or provincial immigration offices in person with their passport or valid travel documents. Applicants need to provide accurate personal information, including an official mobile number and email if available, and undergo facial photo capture and fingerprint collection for verification.
Processing takes up to seven working days. Results are sent via the VNeID app, registered mobile number, or email. Applications are accepted during business hours from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, and the service is free of charge.
For applicants under 14 or those under guardianship, a representative must accompany them and use their own official mobile number to register. Officials say issuing digital IDs to foreigners is a crucial step in modernizing Vietnam’s administrative system and aligns with the country’s goals for national digital transformation.
