Vietnam’s vehicle market slightly rises in august
Vietnam’s vehicle market slightly rose by 3.1 per cent in August of 2025 year-on-year (YoY). Members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) collectively sold 21,408 units last month, 18 per cent down from July. Including non-VAMA members, the overall tally for August amounts to 40,596 units sold.
MARKET STATISTICS
In Vietnam’s auto market, passenger vehicle sales decreased to 13,769 units in August, down 13.4 per cent YoY. Contrastingly, commercial vehicle sales increased YoY by 32.1 per cent to 6,596 units sold. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles performed best with a 177.0 per cent jump from 470 units last year to 1,302 sold this year. Lastly, special purpose vehicle (SPV) sales decreased by more than half from 47 sold in August last year to only 21 sold last month.
Sales of completely knocked down (CKD) or locally assembled vehicles amounted to 12,671 units in August, declining 19 per cent YoY. Imported vehicles, on the other hand, sold 13,302 units, declining 17 per cent from July.
TOP BRANDS OF AUGUST
Vietnam’s top-selling auto brands of August remain largely unchanged from July.
VinFast continues its streak as Vietnam’s top-selling brand with 10,922 units sold in August and a total of 342,199 units sold year-to-date (YTD). The domestic brand acquired 26.9 per cent of the market last month. Majority of its sales can be attributed to four of its models; the VF 5 , VF 3, Herio Green, and VF 6. So far, VinFast sold 89,970 units in 2025.
Toyota came in 2nd with less than half of VinFast’s sales. The auto giant sold 5,171 vehicles in August and acquired 12.7 per cent of the market. Accordingly, Toyota sales are 10 per cent up from the same period last year. Toyota’s YTD sales amount to 41,113 units in 2025.
At 3rd place is Thaco Kia, selling 3,818 units and acquiring 9.4 per cent of the market last month. Kia’s August sales improved by a slight 2.3 per cent year-on-year. Its cumulative sales also improved by 10.7 per cent, amounting to 32,405 units in 2025.
Non-VAMA member Hyundai came at 4th place, overtaking Ford. The company sold 3,701 units last month and acquired 9.1 per cent market share. The Korean carmaker’s sales are down 20.9 per cent YoY, while YTD sales amounted to 31,506 units.
Ford swapped places with Hyundai and landed on the 5th spot last month. Its sales are up by 8.7 per cent with 3,546 sold and 8.7 per cent market share acquired. Similarly, Honda climbed to the 6th spot from 8th in July. The Japanese automaker’s sales shot up by 96.1 per cent with 2,275 units sold and 5.6 per cent market share acquired.
Mitsubishi falls slightly below Honda with 2,180 vehicles sold. The company faces a 46.7 per cent decline in sales YoY, acquiring only 5.4 per cent of the auto market in August.
Mazda’s sales also declined YoY at 1,977 units, decreasing by 21.2 per cent with 4.9 per cent market share acquired.
Isuzu and Suzuki retain their 9th and 10th place ranks in August. Isuzu sold 1,061 vehicles with a 37.8 per cent jump in sales YoY, while Suzuki sold only 626 units. Suzuki’s sales also increased YoY by 33.5 per cent.
While there were no new entrants among the top 10, Dothanh-JMC makes its debut as the top 13th best-selling brand in August. The light truck manufacturer sold 186 units in August, with no data from last year for comparison.
TOP 10 VEHICLE MODELS
Sales of the VF 5 topped the Vietnamese auto market with 2,745 units sold, 6.8 per cent up YoY and overtaking the VF 3 from last month. The VF 3 placed at 2nd place, following the VF 5 by a small margin and sold 2,481 units. The Herio Green model made its debut and immediately shot up to 3rd place, selling 2,395 units. Lastly, the VF 6 maintained its 4th place position with 2,038 units sold.
In 5th place is the Ford Ranger with 1,511 units sold. Sales of the ranger jumped by 18.6 per cent YoY. Comparatively, the Ford Everest did marginally better, shooting up from 12th place to 7th last August. The Everest sold 1,054 units, improving by 29.7 per cent.
Sandwiched between the two Ford models is the Honda City. The City claimed the 6th place spot, selling 1,136 units in August. Sales of the City rose by a staggering 169.8 per cent, the highest in difference amongst the top 10.
At 8th place is Mazda’s CX-5 model. The CX-5 sold 1,025 units, decreasing slightly YoY by 4.2 per cent. The Toyota Yaris Cross follows at 9th place, selling 1,012 units and improving by 9.2 per cent YoY. In last place is the Kia Frontier with only 930 units sold.
