Vietnam to enjoy 9-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2026

The 2026 Lunar New Year, or Tet in Vietnam, will span nine days, from Feb. 14 to 22, as approved by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Monday.

The break covers the period from the 27th day of the last lunar month to the 6th day of the first lunar month.

Civil servants and workers will have five official days off, one day before the Lunar New Year and four days after, supplemented by four weekend days before and after the official break, bringing the total to nine days. Work will resume on Feb. 23, the seventh day of the Lunar New Year.

The Prime Minister tasked the Minister of Home Affairs with notifying agencies, businesses, and workers about the schedule.

Relevant units are required to arrange on-duty personnel to ensure uninterrupted public services during the holiday.

Ministries and local authorities are also instructed to maintain stable supply and pricing of goods, support economic activity, and promote thrift and efficiency throughout the period.

Vietnam has 11 official public holidays each year, fewer than the Southeast Asian average. These include New Year’s Day (1 day), Lunar New Year (5 days), the Hung Kings’ Temple Festival (1 day), the April 30–May 1 holiday (2 days), and National Day (2 days).

Since 2021, the National Day break has been extended by one day, with the government deciding whether to observe Sept. 1 or 3.

Foreign workers in Vietnam are also entitled to additional days off for their home country’s traditional holidays and National Day.
