Access to Vietnam’s Da Lat severely disrupted following landslides
Road access to Da Lat, a popular tourist destination in Vietnam, located in newly-merged Lam Dong Province, has become increasingly difficult due to the closures of three major passes on National Highway 20, including D’Ran, Prenn, and Mimosa, following landslides.
Mimosa Pass suffered a complete rupture following a landslide on Wednesday night, while Prenn and D’Ran Passes remain temporarily closed for landslide mitigation.
Authorities advise residents and tourists to avoid approaching the blocked areas and to use alternative, safer routes:
From Khanh Hoa to Da Lat
Drivers should avoid National Highway 27C due to a landslide on Khanh Le Pass and National Highway 27.
Vehicles can take National Highway 1 toward the former Binh Thuan Province and then choose one of three routes into Lam Dong Province:
– National Highway 28B: As the road is currently under upgrade, drivers should travel slowly and follow traffic control, and then enter National Highway 20 in Ta Hine Commune.
– National Highway 28: After entering the road, drivers can travel through Son Dien Commune, then onto National Highway 20.
– National Highway 55: Vehicles can take the La Da – Bao Loc route, and then travel along National Highway 20.
The current Lam Dong Province was formed by merging three provinces Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, and Dak Nong in early July.
From Duc Trong area to Da Lat
Due to the closure of Prenn and Mimosa Passes, vehicles are advised to take the SAM – Tuyen Lam Pass (Sacom Tuyen Lam Road, not suitable for trucks) or Provincial Road 725 (Ta Nung Pass) toward Cam Ly.
These routes are open and monitored by traffic police officers.
From Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat
Travelers should use National Highway 20 via Bao Loc – Di Linh – Duc Trong.
When they approach Lien Nghia, they should avoid Prenn and Mimosa Passes. Alternative routes include:
– For cars and passenger buses: Take the Lien Khuong – Prenn expressway, then turn left onto SAM – Tuyen Lam Route.
– For trucks and freight vehicles: Use Provincial Road 725 to bypass blocked sections.
Reopening of the affected passes will depend on geological and weather conditions.
Meanwhile, local authorities are maintaining 24/7 monitoring to ensure safe travel for residents and tourists.
A section of Mimosa Pass collapses
On Wednesday night, a severe landslide occurred on Mimosa Pass in Xuan Huong Ward, causing a stretch to rupture completely, cutting off traffic in both directions.
The sinkhole is some 100 meters wide, 30 meters deep, with a slide extending about 200 meters.
Local police officers and rescuers immediately cordoned off the site, while officials have been on-site since Thursday morning to coordinate repair efforts.
Mimosa Pass, 11 kilometers long along National Highway 20, is a key southern gateway into Da Lat, alongside Prenn and Sacom Passes.
Recent days have seen multiple landslides around the area, including erosion at Prenn Pass near the Datanla waterfall, cracks at the D’Ran suspension bridge, and landslides on Ngoan Muc and Khanh Le Passes, complicating travel between Khanh Hoa Province and Da Lat.
Over the past few days, heavy rainfall and upstream flooding have led to severe flooding in several communes and wards in Lam Dong Province, paralyzing roads and disrupting local communities.
