First bicycle lanes take shape in Ho Chi Minh City
After more than two months of construction, Ho Chi Minh City’s first dedicated bicycle lanes along Mai Chi Tho Boulevard in An Khanh Ward are gradually taking shape, marking a milestone in the city’s push toward greener and safer urban transport.
The bicycle lanes run 5.8 kilometers in both directions between Nguyen Co Thach Street and D1 Street.
Along the sidewalks of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard, several sections have already been paved with asphalt, allowing residents to travel smoothly.
In other areas, sidewalks have been excavated, curbs reinforced, and crushed stone laid to complete the roadbed in preparation for final construction stages.
The project developer has also begun installing public bicycle parking areas and bike-sharing stations at convenient locations near residential neighborhoods, making it easier for residents to access and use the new infrastructure.
Tran Minh Tan, a 64-year-old local resident from Binh Hung Hoa Ward, said he strongly supports the city’s decision to introduce the dedicated bicycle lanes.
Tan said that the lanes are completely separated from motorbikes and cars, helping cyclists feel safer and more confident when riding.
Under the approved design, each bicycle lane is two meters wide, narrowing to 1.5 meters on bridge sections, with a designed speed of 20 kph and a total investment of around VND12.7 billion (US$483,000).
The project is slated for completion by December 31.
Once operational, the lanes are expected to enhance road safety, encourage the use of bicycles, promote environmentally friendly transport, and improve urban living quality by creating a quieter and more comfortable public space.
