Vietnam Party leader To Lam re-elected to 14th Central Committee

Party General Secretary To Lam has been re-elected as a member of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, according to results announced by the 14th National Party Congress on Thursday.

This marks the fourth consecutive term that he has served on the Party Central Committee, spanning the 11th through the 14th terms.

According to the election results, 10 members of the Politburo and nine members of the Secretariat of the 13th term were re-elected to the 14th Central Committee.

The nine other Politburo members re-elected, besides Party leader To Lam, are Tran Thanh Man, Chairman of the National Assembly; Tran Cam Tu, Standing Member of the Secretariat; Bui Thi Minh Hoai, Chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Le Minh Hung, Head of the Party Central Organization Commission; General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense; General Luong Tam Quang, Minister of Public Security; Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Hanoi Party Secretary; General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Director of the General Department of Political Affairs of the Vietnam People’s Army; and Do Van Chien, Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly.

The nine members of the Secretariat re-elected are Party General Secretary To Lam; Tran Cam Tu, Standing Member of the Secretariat; Bui Thi Minh Hoai, Chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Le Minh Hung, Head of the Party Central Organization Commission; Trinh Van Quyet, Head of the Party Central Commission for Information and Education and Mass Mobilization; Le Hoai Trung, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Tran Luu Quang, HCMC Party Secretary; General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Director of the General Department of Political Affairs of the Vietnam People’s Army; and Le Minh Tri, Standing Deputy Head of the Party Central Internal Affairs Commission.

Party General Secretary To Lam, 69, is from Hung Yen Province. He has been a member of the Politburo for the two 12th and 13th terms, and a National Assembly deputy for the 14th and 15th terms.

After studying at the Central Police School, now the People’s Security Academy, he began his career at the Department of Political Security 1. He later served as deputy head of Political Security 1, head of Political Security 3, and held senior positions within the General Department of Security. In 2009, while holding the rank of major general, he was appointed by the prime minister as head of the General Department of Security 1.

In August 2010, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Public Security and became Minister of Public Security in April 2016. In early 2019, he was promoted to the rank of general, becoming the fourth officer in the history of Vietnam’s People’s Public Security force to attain its highest rank.

In May 2024, he was elected by the National Assembly as President of Vietnam. Three months later, he was elected by the 13th Party Central Committee as Party General Secretary.

He served concurrently as President and Party General Secretary for two months, before continuing in the role of Party General Secretary from October 2024.
