Hanoi taxis to go electric by 2030
Hanoi will replace all gasoline and diesel taxis with green-energy vehicles by 2030.
On Feb. 27 the city People’s Committee issued a plan outlining phased transition and support policies for operators, with the specific targets being 63–64% in 2026 and 68–70% in 2027 before reaching 100% by 2030.
After 2030, the city will focus on operational stability for its electric and green-energy taxis, prioritizing better access to charging infrastructure, designated pickup and drop-off points, and traffic organization suited to EV operations.
It will draft and submit a resolution to the city People’s Council on policies to support the transition and measures to restrict high-emission vehicles.
It will also propose that higher authorities extend the registration fee exemption for electric and green-energy cars, particularly for businesses operating taxi.
Hanoi has more than 14,300 active taxis, nearly 8,800 of them electric. Another 13,600 are awaiting replacement by 2030.
Earlier the city unveiled a plan to make all public buses green by 2030.
The People’s Council also approved a resolution on low-emission zones last November, under which gasoline-powered motorbikes will be restricted during certain hours or in designated areas.
