Vietnamese film goes to German, US festivals
Bui Kim Quy’s ‘Mien Ky Uc’ (Memoryland) is Vietnam’s entry at the Berlinale in Germany this week and Doc Fortnight in the U.S. later this month.
The film is being screened at cinemas from Feb. 14 to 19 as part of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival.
While the event has attracted over 250 entries from 69 countries and territories, ‘Memoryland’ is competing in the Forum category with nine others.
The film’s producers said they would next take it to the Museum of Modern Art’s 2022 Doc Fortnight in New York.
The festival will run from Feb. 23 to March 10 with 19 features and 10 short documentaries taking part.
The 99-minute Vietnamese film has multiple stories set in various locations and periods of time that are closely connected by death.
One is about a poor boy carefully budgeting for his mother’s funeral and another is about a woman who decides to bury her husband who died in a construction accident in his hometown to comfort his soul.
It earned kudos for its plot and beautiful imagery at the 2021 Busan International Film Festival in South Korea last October.
Quy is a writer and director who studied screenwriting at the Hanoi Academy of Theater and Cinema, and works as a lecturer. She writes scripts for films as well as television.
‘Memoryland’, Quy’s second film, was supported by ASEAN Cinema Fund Busan’s Script Development Fund in 2016.
