Hue to spend $800,000 to renovate abandoned water park

Authorities in Hue in central Vietnam have agreed to spend VND20 billion ($844,100) to renovate a dragon-shaped water park, left abandoned for years, into a public park.

Vo Le Nhat, chairman of Hue, said a two-kilometer-long walking route around Thuy Tien Lake, just eight kilometers outside Huong Thuy District in Hue, will be built and lined with granite on a concrete foundation.

A lighting, water supply and drainage system will also be developed.

The renovation project will be carried out in two years to turn the abandoned water park into a popular tourist attraction. The starting date has not been revealed.

Funded by state-owned enterprise Hue Capital Tourism Company, the water park opened its door in 2004 and closed down just a few months after.

In 2008, investment and trading company Haco Hue took over the project with the aim to restructure the site for eco-tourism, including restaurants, spas, accommodation, arts, a convention center, and a space for outdoor events, but later abandoned the venture.

Following closure, the park suffered serious degradation, prompting local authorities to prohibit entry over safety concerns.

In 2018, U.S. news site Huffington Post listed Thuy Tien Water Park in Hue among the 10 most creepy destinations while British newspaper Daily Mail called it « a curious and creepy sit » ideal for backpackers to explore.
