Many schools in northern Vietnam close due to bitter cold weather
Many kindergartens and elementary schools in some northern localities, including Hanoi, Lang Son and Bac Giang, allowed students to stay home as temperatures fell below 10 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
Hanoi recorded a temperature of 9.9 degrees Celsius at 6:00 am on Tuesday. As a result, schools informed parents of pre-school and elementary students of the school break.
However, schools did not refuse to receive students if their parents still took them to.
At Trung Tu and Kim Lien Elementary Schools in Dong Da District and Le Van Tam Elementary School in Hai Ba Trung District, several teachers were still present to receive students.
Some schools switched to online classes.
Giang Thanh Thuy, principal of Trung Van Elementary School in Nam Tu Lien District, said the school has an online teaching plan if the cold wave persists.
The municipal Department of Education and Training had earlier announced that kindergartens and elementary schools would shut if temperatures dipped below 10 degrees Celsius.
Students of middle schools would be allowed to stay home if temperatures were under seven degrees Celsius.
The department also asked its subordinates in districts and schools to get updates on weather conditions.
Schools should not organize outdoor activities and require students to wear uniforms, and should focus on keeping students warm.
In Lang Son Province, over 73,000 students of 267 kindergartens, elementary and middle schools were also allowed to stay away from school as temperatures were under six degrees Celsius on Tuesday, a leader of the provincial Department of Education and Training told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
Some schools offered online classes, the official noted.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported temperature in Bac Giang Province, also in northern Vietnam, at 8.7 degrees Celsius at 6:00 am on Tuesday.
As a result, kindergartens and elementary schools in the province asked their students to stay home.
However, some students still came to schools as their parents were busy and could not let their children stay at home.
Schools assigned teachers to admit these students.
