New airport near Hanoi sees capacity increased to 50 million passengers a year

Gia Binh International Airport, under construction in the northern Bac Ninh Province, will have a capacity of 50 million passengers a year and four runways.

The Ministry of Construction has approved adjustments to its plans to the effect.

Being built in the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao and some 40 km from Hanoi, the airport will be classified as 4E, which means it can accommodate large aircraft such as Boeing 777 and Airbus A330.

It will be used for both civilian and military purposes.

By 2030 it is expected to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo a year.

Following expansion, by 2050 that will increase to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo.

The original plan only envisaged handling five million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo by 2030, and 15 million passengers and one million tons by 2050.

By 2030 it will have two runways of 3.5 kilometers and space to park 81 aircraft, and by 2050 these will increase to four and 123.

The airport will now require 1,959 ha of land, nearly five times the area sanctioned in the old plan.

The Ministry of Construction has tasked the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam with seeking and incorporating feedback from the finance and planning department to finalize the plan.

It will also work with the Bac Ninh Province administration for the purpose.
