Siemens Mobility joins high-speed projects in Vietnam

VinSpeed, part of the Vietnamese Vingroup, and Siemens Mobility have signed a strategic cooperation agreement and a framework agreement that pave the way for the development of high-speed rail infrastructure in Vietnam.

Under the partnership, Siemens Mobility will act as a technology partner, responsible for the design, supply, and integration of Velaro Novo high-speed trains and key railway subsystems.

The cooperation aims to develop high-speed lines to international standards and creates the basis for future implementation contracts in a program considered strategic for the modernization of rail transport in Vietnam.

Siemens Mobility, technology partner for a turnkey project

Under the agreement, Siemens Mobility will provide turnkey solutions, including high-speed rolling stock, railway infrastructure, and associated services. The technology package covers, among other things:

  • ETCS Level 2 signaling systems,
  • automatic train operation (ATO) functions,
  • railway telecommunications systems,
  • electrification, and energy solutions.

Siemens Mobility is also looking into providing advanced maintenance services to ensure high long-term system availability.

First high-speed lines in northern and southern Vietnam

As part of the cooperation, VinSpeed and Siemens Mobility are working on the development of several high-speed lines, two of which have already been defined:

  • Hanoi – Quang Ninh (Ha Long), with a length of 121 km and four stations;
  • Ben Thanh – Can Gio, with a length of 54 km and two stations.

All lines will be equipped with modern railway technologies, including ETCS Level 2 signaling, electrification, and communications systems to ensure safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability.

Velaro Novo, the high-speed platform proposed for Vietnam

For these lines, Siemens Mobility is proposing Velaro Novo trains, the company’s latest high-speed platform.

The trains are designed for a maximum speed of 350 km/h and offer at least 10% more transport capacity than previous generations thanks to an optimized gauge.

Velaro Novo stands out with energy consumption reduced by approximately 30%, contributing to lower operating costs and emissions.

The trains are designed to cope with difficult terrain conditions, including steep gradients, and are adapted to Vietnam’s geographical diversity.

The integration of ETCS Level 2 and ATO enables a high level of safety and efficient network operation.

Siemens has been active in Vietnam since 1993, with over 30 years of presence in the local market. The company is involved in projects in areas such as energy, healthcare, industry, and transportation, including the railway sector, where it provides solutions for passenger and freight transport.

VinSpeed is a company dedicated to the development of high-speed rail and modern transportation infrastructure projects in Vietnam.
